25 OCTOBER 2013 - 26 OCTOBER 2013
This year’s Creative Time Summit, titled “Art, Place and Dislocation in the 21st Century City”, will be screened in Istanbul at CO-PILOT, on October 25 and 26.
Hosted by Creative Time -the leading presenter of innovative public art- the fifth annual Creative Time Summit will take place at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. The Summit will address issues such as interaction between gentrification and the arts, and the artist's role and mission in the public sphere. Fulya Erdemci will contribute with a report on the local and cultural climate of Turkey, and Halil Altındere will be featured in the Summit with his film “Wonderland”.
The Creative Time Summit, initiated in 2009, is a growing platform of cultural practitioners working in the realm of social justice and socially engaged art. Every year, some of the most innovative artists, activists, critics, writers, and curators come together in New York to share experiences and perspectives with one another and an international audience.
The Summit is organized by Creative Time, founded in 1974 to commission and present public art projects. Its programs have reached from New York to New Orleans, Haiti to Hanoi, and Dubai to Denver. To date, the Creative Time Summit has featured more than 140 presentations for live audiences totaling more than 4,000, in addition to tens of thousands of online viewers at more than 40 screening sites around the world.
This year’s keynote speakers are Neil Brenner, Professor of Urban Theory and Director of the Urban Theory Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Design; Lucy Lippard, writer, art critic, curator, and activist; and Rebecca Solnit, who has written extensively on such topics as the environment, politics, place, and art. A diverse group of artists, architects, planners, politicians, activists, and theorists from across the globe will examine the positive and negative consequences of the widespread belief that the arts are a necessary ingredient in the making and re-making of cities. This tear, exclusively at the screening sites, the Summit will also feature live Q&A sessions with a selection of presenters. In addition to the live screening and Q&A sessions, Co-PILOT will host a panel focusing on the Summit themes as they pertain to the developments in Turkey.
The Creative Time Summit - Istanbul screening events are a MAHAL & CO-PILOT collaboration.
The panel will be held in Turkish, and the Summit screening will be in English.
